About Cataracts and Cataract Surgery

Watch a video about Dr. Collins.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that occurs as we age. This cloudiness blocks and distorts light passing through the eye and thus impedes clear vision. Over time, the cataract will grow larger and cloud more of the lens. Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed using only local intravenous (IV) sedation and topical anesthetic drops to numb the eye. Dr. Collins uses the very best and latest technology available. He creates a very small “self-sealing” incision and uses high-energy ultrasound waves (phacoemulsification) to break the cloudy cataract into small pieces, which are then removed from the eye by gentle suction. An intraocular lens (IOL) implant is then inserted into the eye to compensate for the removal of the eye’s natural lens. Depending on your desired outcomes and the health of your eyes, Collins Vision offers several different types of IOLs, including Crystalens and ReSTOR. Crystalens is an accommodating lens that gently moves with the eye’s muscles to improve the patient’s ability to change focus from near to distant objects, while ReSTOR lenses improve nearsightedness and age-related farsightedness (presbyopia).

Bladeless, Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

Collins Vision uses the Bausch & Lomb Victus Femtosecond Laser Platform to assist in performing custom laser cataract surgery. Custom laser cataract surgery, as opposed to traditional cataract surgery with a blade, represents one of the great surgical advancements of our time, and the Victus has been named the new benchmark for safety and precision. Although the skill, experience and proficiency of the cataract surgeon is still the predominant factor in achieving the best results, the precision of the Victus allows Dr. Collins to perform repeatable and reliable cataract surgery with accuracy to 1/1000th of a millimeter. This level of perfection combined with premium lifestyle lens implants allow those with cataracts to look forward to decreased dependency on glasses.

In addition to advanced cataract surgery, Dr. Collins offers LASIK and a range of corneal surgeries, as well as dry eye treatment, comprehensive eye care, Botox injections and Latisse.
