Providing cataract surgery with monofocal and multifocal IOLs in Manhattan, Astoria, Queens, New York City and the surrounding area
Gregory Pamel, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has advanced fellowship training in corneal, cataract and lens implant surgery. As a Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Pamel has earned a reputation for excellence in New York City due to his expertise and impressive surgical background that boasts more than 15 years’ experience and more than 8,000 cataract surgeries.
Dr. Pamel was involved in the introduction of new cataract lens implant technologies, including multifocal and accommodating implants that correct for distance, intermediate and near vision. He also implants the Acrysof Toric lens implant that corrects for astigmatism. Dr. Pamel was the first doctor in New York to provide Crystalens and ReZoom lens implants for cataracts patients. Most recently, Dr. Pamel was selected to be one of the first surgeons in the country and the first surgeon in New York to implant the new Tecnis multifocal lens implant that corrects for both distance and near vision in all lighting conditions.
Dr. Pamel specializes in “no-stitch” cataract surgery, which is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Prior to surgery, Dr. Pamel educates his patients about various lens implant technologies. He also takes the time to learn about the visual demands of each patient to determine the best lens implant type. Dr. Pamel performs critical testing with state-of-the-art equipment in order to improve the surgical results. He begins the procedure by creating a small, self-sealing incision in the eye. Then, he uses phacoemulsification (ultrasound waves) to break the clouded lens into smaller pieces. The pieces are extracted through the incision and the natural lens is replaced with a high-quality intraocular lens implant (IOL). Patients are able to return to their homes the same morning. In some cases, after the eye has healed, Dr. Pamel is able to refine the patients’ visual results through corrective laser surgery
