Serving patients seeking LASIK eye surgery in the Monterey Bay area, including Carmel, Salinas and the surrounding area
Eye MD Monterey offers Custom Wavefront LASIK eye surgery with the state-of-the-art VISX S4 excimer laser system. With features such as wavefront mapping and iris registration, this advanced technology allows Dr. Penrose and his team to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism as well as higher order aberrations (subtle refractive errors unique to each set of eyes), thereby increasing the odds of optimal postoperative vision.
In order to provide the most individualized LASIK procedure, Dr. Penrose first obtains a unique, three-dimensional map of the eyes. This information is then used to guide the laser vision correction procedure for best results.
LASIK begins with the creation of the corneal flap, a thin piece of tissue that is folded back from the eye to expose the stroma (the middle layer of the cornea). The flap is created with either a microkeratome (a handheld surgical tool) or a femtosecond laser (bladeless LASIK). Next, the VISX S4 excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea by removing microscopic pieces of corneal tissue. Once this is accomplished, the corneal flap is placed into its original position to protect the eye during the healing process. LASIK eye surgery is performed under topical anesthesia and lasts less than 15 minutes per eye. Most patients experience improved vision within 24 hours and are able to gradually reduce their need for corrective eyewear. Dr. Penrose also offers PRK, an alternative laser eye surgery technique for patients who do not qualify for LASIK.
