William Ellis, MD, FACS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform LASIK eye surgery. He is the pioneer of Epi-LASIK surgery — an advanced form of laser eye surgery that requires an extremely thin epithelial flap. Dr. Ellis has been practicing ophthalmology for more than 33 years, and he has performed more than 68,000 laser eye surgery procedures. He is the author of several ophthalmology textbooks and many scientific articles. Due to his extensive experience and numerous accomplishments, he was invited to chair a panel on the surgical correction of astigmatism at the 26th International Congress of Ophthalmology.
Ellis Eye and Laser Medical Center has been named a “Specialized Astigmatism Center” by Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH (TPV). Read the press release.
Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center has seven offices located in San Francisco, San Jose, Walnut Creek, El Cerrito, Corte Madera, Roseville and Gilroy, which are open on Saturdays by appointment. Dr. Ellis personally performs all laser eye surgery procedures at all surgery centers. For patients who are not LASIK candidates, Dr. Ellis offers Epi-LASIK, PRK and radial keratotomy. At his offices, patients can also undergo refractive lens exchange surgery (RLE) and cataract surgery with premium IOLs. The goal of all of these procedures is to improve his patients’ eyesight and reduce their dependence on corrective eyewear.
Dr. Ellis also offers LipiFlow, an innovative new treatment for dry eye disease. LipiFlow treats the root cause of many cases of evaporative dry eye: blocked meibomian glands. Opening and clearing these blocked glands with a combination of gentle pressure and heat restores the production and secretion of lipids (oils) needed for a healthy tear film. One treatment every one to two years can provide relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of dry eyes. Thanks to LipiFlow, patients can enjoy their favorite activities without worrying about dry or itchy eyes.
In addition to LASIK and dry eye disease, Dr. Ellis specializes in the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and pterygium.

Bladeless LASIK at Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center
Dr. William Ellis focuses his practice on performing bladeless LASIK. This procedure combines the Bausch & Lomb 217 excimer laser with advanced surface ablation in order to eliminate the need for any bladed instruments. This approach usually results in crystal-clear vision and minimal discomfort.
In order to deliver the most precise LASIK treatment possible, Dr. Ellis uses a sophisticated technology that creates a map of the patient’s cornea. This map, which shows even the minutest imperfections in corneal shape, is used to program the excimer laser. The excimer laser corrects the imperfections in the cornea so that it refracts light rays more precisely. As a result, the patient perceives clear images at all distances.
Prior to administering the excimer laser treatment, Dr. Ellis must create a small flap in the outermost layer of the cornea. He uses advanced surface ablation to perform this task. Dr. Ellis then folds the flap out of the way and reshapes the underlying tissues with the excimer laser. The corneal flap is then replaced in its original position and serves as a natural bandage.
