Serving Lombard, IL and Chicago Cataracts and LASIK Surgery Patients

Richard B. Foulkes, MD, is a refractive and anterior segment ophthalmologist who has performed more than 20,000 refractive surgery procedures. Dr. Foulkes founded Foulkes Vision Institute in 1999, where his goal is to make LASIK surgery a safer and more accurate procedure.

Dr. Foulkes began his LASIK training in 1997 under the tutelage of two leaders in the field of vision correction surgery, Drs. Jeff Machat of Toronto and Steve Slade of Houston Texas. Starting a research center within his own practice in 2000, he has since been heavily involved in additional studies designed to push vision correction treatments to the next tier of excellence. Dr. Foulkes has developed various techniques for studying the efficacy of microkeratomes and has patented several devices used to improve eye surgery and patient safety. An example is a tool designed to keep fluid away from the corneal treatment surface where it can degrade the laser effect. Other innovations which demonstrate his commitment to refractive surgical outcomes are a method for scanning treatment surface before the treatment and his work using the arc scanning imaging device, called Artemis, which is unique to only a few centers in the world. His images have been shown around the world demonstrating important features of the laser vision procedure.

To schedule a consultation with Dr. Foulkes to discuss your vision correction options and determine whether or not you are a candidate for LASIK, contact his Lombard, Illinois office at (866) 586-3177.

More About Foulkes Vision Institute

Ziemer’s FEMTO LDV-
bladefree laser flap maker

Dr. Foulkes’s Foulkes Vision Institute is a state-of-the-art vision correction facility committed to incorporating the latest therapies and the most advanced refractive surgery technologies to ensure the finest possible results for each and every patient. Vision correction procedures performed at the hands of Dr. Foulkes and his team of highly experienced professionals, include LASIK, LASEK, PRK, CK, and cataract surgery. Foulkes Vision Institute is also a comprehensive care facility where diagnosis and treatment are offered for glaucoma, macular degeneration, and dry eye.

For vision correction surgery, extensive pre-operative evaluations are conducted using auto refraction, retinal scanning, and Orbscan topography (via the Orbscan II diagnostic system). Dr. Foulkes performs laser eye surgery using the Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217A excimer laser system, a highly targeted technology designed specifically to ensure optimal results tailored to the individual. For the flap creation during LASIK surgery, Dr. Foulkes does not recommend use of a microkeratome, but recommends instead the “All Laser LASIK” technique using the newest and most advanced femtosecond surgical laser.

Ziemer’s FEMTO LDV, the first compact, mobile femtosecond surgical laser, has been conceived to provide a versatile, powerful platform for a wide spectrum of applications in corneal surgery. The solution by Ziemer is based on an all-new femtolaser design concept that seamlessly integrates into LASIK procedures and corneal surgery.

Ziemer’s FEMTO LDVTM. Femtolaser surgery with convincing clinical advantages:

  • Smooth surface of stromal bed
  • Smooth edges for optimal flap closure
  • Thin flaps of even thickness
  • Rapid healing and visual recovery
  • Excellent visual outcomes
